چکیده
Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne parasitic infection responsible for long-term chronic morbidity in the form of lymphoedema, genital pathology (especially hydroceles), recurrent disabling fevers (lymphangitis) and elephantiasis in over 40 million people around the world (Ottesen et al, 2008). Currently, over one billion people are exposed to infection in 81 endemic countries in Asia, Africa, the Western Pacific and some parts of the Americas (World Health Organization [WHO], 2009).

Assessing Progress in Reducing the At-Risk Population after 13 Years of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis
BACKGROUND In 1997, the World Health Assembly adopted Resolution 50.29, committing to the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem, subsequently targeted for 2020. The initial estimates were that 1.2 billion people were at-risk for LF infection globally. Now, 13 years after the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) began implementing mass drug adm...
متن کاملDeterminants of success in national programs to eliminate lymphatic filariasis: a perspective identifying essential elements and research needs.
The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) was launched in 2000. To understand why some national programs have been more successful than others, a panel of individuals with expertise in LF elimination efforts met to assess available data from programs in 8 countries. The goal was to identify: 1) the factors determining success for national LF elimination programs (defined as...
متن کاملRole of vector control in the global program to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.
Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a major cause of acute and chronic morbidity in the tropical and subtropical parts of the world. The availability of safe, single-dose, drug treatment regimens capable of suppressing microfilaremia to very low levels, along with improvements in techniques for diagnosing infection, has resulted in the targeting of this major mosquito-borne disease for global eliminat...
متن کاملProgress and Impact of 13 Years of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis on Reducing the Burden of Filarial Disease
BACKGROUND A Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis was launched in 2000, with mass drug administration (MDA) as the core strategy of the programme. After completing 13 years of operations through 2012 and with MDA in place in 55 of 73 endemic countries, the impact of the MDA programme on microfilaraemia, hydrocele and lymphedema is in need of being assessed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL...

BACKGROUND The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF), launched in 2000, has the target of eliminating the disease as a public health problem by the year 2020. The strategy adopted is mass drug administration (MDA) to all eligible individuals in endemic communities and the implementation of measures to reduce the morbidity of those suffering from chronic disease. Success has...
